Can I use email with my DevSpace subdomain?

No. DevSpace does not support MX records or any email-related functionality. Subdomains are for web hosting only. If you need email, consider using a separate domain or email forwarding services from your email provider.

Can I use A records instead of CNAME?

No. Only CNAME records are supported. A records pointing directly to IP addresses are not permitted. This policy ensures reliability and security across all DevSpace subdomains.

Can I use my own server or VPS?

No. Self-hosted servers, VPS instances, and dedicated servers are not approved. Your site must be hosted on one of the approved platforms: GitHub Pages, Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or Firebase Hosting.

How long does the review process take?

Review typically takes 1-3 business days. Complex requests or those requiring additional information may take longer. You will receive updates through your GitHub pull request.

Can my domain be removed after approval?

Yes. Domains can be revoked at any time for violations of our policies, prolonged inactivity, or at the discretion of administrators. See the Abuse & Revocation Policy for details.

Is there a cost for using DevSpace?

No. DevSpace subdomains are completely free for eligible developers and projects.

Can I request multiple subdomains?

Multiple subdomains may be granted if you have distinct projects that each meet the eligibility requirements. However, registering multiple names for the same project or squatting on names is not permitted.

What happens if my requested name is taken?

Subdomains are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If your preferred name is unavailable, you will need to choose an alternative. Consider variations of your username, project name, or adding relevant descriptors.

Can I transfer my subdomain to someone else?

Subdomains are non-transferable. If you no longer need your subdomain, it will be released back to the pool for others to request. The new owner must submit their own application.

Do I need to renew my subdomain?

No formal renewal is required. However, subdomains may be revoked for prolonged inactivity (typically 6+ months of the site being unreachable) or if your content no longer meets eligibility requirements.

Can I use a DevSpace subdomain for a commercial project?

Commercial business websites are generally not eligible. However, open source projects, developer tools, and educational resources that happen to generate revenue may still qualify. Each request is evaluated individually during review.

What should I do if my subdomain stops working?

First, verify your CNAME configuration on your hosting platform. Check that your custom domain is still properly set up. If the issue persists, contact us through the main DevSpace website with your subdomain details.

How do I update my subdomain configuration?

To update your CNAME target or contact information, submit a new pull request to the registry repository with your updated JSON file. Changes are reviewed and applied within 1-2 business days.

Can I delete my subdomain?

Yes. To remove your subdomain, submit a pull request that deletes your JSON file from the registry repository, or contact us through the main website to request removal.
